CES 2014 Huawei Announces the Ascend Mate 2 with 6 1 inch 720p Display 4050mAh battery 13MP Camera and More!

Now it’s Huawei’s turn on the stage in Las Vegas. Right now Huawei is announcing the Ascend Mate 2. Which is a 6.1-inch 720p device. It’s the successor to the Ascend Mate which they announced last year at CES. The Ascend Mate 2 is featuring a 6.1-inch 720p IPS display, their own 1.6GHz quad-core SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card slot. There’s also a 13MP shooter on the back and a 5MP shooter on the front. The Ascend Mate 2 does have a removable back cover, so you can access the SIM card slot and microSD card slot. It’s running Huawei’s own Emotion UI on top of Android 4.3. A shame it’s not running Android 4.4 – KitKat, like many other devices at CES this year.

The Ascend Mate 2 is also featuring the same 4050mAh battery which was in the original Mate. When I reviewed the Mate earlier this year, I was quite impressed with the battery life. Given, it was a 6.1-inch device, I though that a 4050mAh battery wouldn’t be big enough. But surprisingly it was. It lasted me all day and then some. Huawei is promising about 60 hours of what they consider “normal use” and 12 hours of web surfing. If I had to guess, I’d say you could probably get a good day, to a day and a half out of this one.

So far there’s no word on pricing or availability. But we more than likely won’t see it here in the US. Since Huawei has decided to pull out of the US market. However, I’m sure we’ll see it unlocked within a couple of months of release. Hopefully we’ll get more information on the pricing and availability real soon. Acer Unveils the Budget Minded 7 inch Iconia B1 Android Tablet

Acer’s second tablet they are announcing today is the Acer Iconia B1. This one is a 7-inch tablet that starts at $129.99. Acer doesn’t mention what the resolution of this display is, but I’d suspect it’s around 1024 x 768 resolution. It’s also sporting a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, which again Acer doesn’t mention who’s making that processor, but I’d guess it’s a MediaTek processor. There’s also 1GB of RAM inside, along with a microSD card slot inside. The Acer Iconia B1 is sporting Android 4.2.1 at launch. Hopefully we’ll see an update to Android 4.4 – KitKat since it is made for lower-end products like the Iconia B1.

Similar to the Iconia A1-830, the Iconia B1 is also launching with some accessories. Acer is offering a protection case that is available in multiple colors. The case guards against scratches and acts as a stand to let users read, type, and play on their tablet. This is the Acer B1-720. Which does come with 16GB of Storage and is WiFi only. Acer is going to be releasing this one in North America in mid-January at a price of $129.99.

For a price of $129, I think this is probably the best tablet you can buy. Now I’m not saying it’s the best tablet to buy, but for this price it probably is. We see many tablets from manufacturers we’ve never heard of selling these Android tablets at this price. But here we have Acer, a company we know and trust. So if you’re just looking for a cheap Android tablet, this is a good choice. But if you can afford to spend another $100 on a tablet, I’d suggest the Nexus 7 (2013). As it’s got a much better display and processor, in my opinion.
