Outwardly resembling the Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX, the Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-15Q is not very striking where high-end technological innovation is concerned but it delivers performance with home entertainment and business applications. I have had my Toshiba Satellite Pro since 2012 and it has never failed yet at home and at the office.
Design
While the Toshiba Satellite Pro range is designed for the office, solid build quality, strong usability and decent specifications make the C660 suitable for home use as well.
Outfitted with a large Toshiba logo on top of the lid, my Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-15Q feels sturdy and resilient within its plastic chassis. The textured, matt finish feels great and protects well against scuffs and scratches.
I can say build quality is impressive throughout, with no loose ends in sight.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro’s thick screen is sure to withstand frequent use.
Keyboard
A QWERTY keyboard fits well into the Toshiba Satellite Pro’s chassis and there is almost no stretching your hands when typing. In all my use, the keys have responded accurately – besides the occasional mistype when you don’t strike the keys firmly.
Touchpad
I am not exactly a fan of the Toshiba Satellite Pro’s touchpad. It is small and narrow, making it difficult to navigate onscreen at times - it takes a few swipes to get from one side of the screen to the other. In contrast, the mouse buttons are huge but are recessed too far, so they too can be difficult to operate.
Suggestion: get a mouse!
Weight
At 2.5kg the Toshiba Satellite Pro is not a laptop built for regular travel.
Battery
While the 159-minute battery life is average, it betters the Advent, Lenovo and Samsung in this group.
Display
The Toshiba Satellite Pro’s vivid 15.6-inch screen comes with a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution which means you can enjoy high-definition 720p content. The display is bright, sharp, vibrant and less reflective.
For a laptop of these times, the Toshiba lacks an HDMI output so you cannot connect it to your TV. However, an analogue VGA port is fitted to connect it to older PC monitors and projectors.
Great performance
Save for a few demanding tasks like professional video editing programs, I have found the Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-15Q’s performance outstanding.
The Intel Core i3 (2.53Ghz) processor offers great power making my Toshiba Satellite Pro more than suitable for relative intricate use. Windows 7 also worked fluidly on the machine.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro’s graphics fared well even with demanding chores – though I saw a few glitches with high-power games.
Hard drive
Was not exactly impressed with the available storage - which stands at 300Gb. The DVD rewriter and five-in-one card reader compensate somewhat, letting you back-up files to DVD, CD and multimedia cards to save space on the hard drive.
My greatest disappointment was with the Toshiba Satellite Pro’s offering of only two USB ports. With one port occupied a mouse, you are left with one port for other peripherals.
There is Bluetooth for sharing files over wireless sharing files.
Audio
Despite being hidden between the keyboard deck and the rear hinge, the Toshiba Satellite Pro’s speakers pump out big sound. My tracks remained crisp and clear even at higher volumes.
Webcam
Photos taken with the Toshiba Satellite Pro’s 720p webcam looked rather dark and grainy. There was also a yellow tint to images taken under fluorescent lighting. Saw better colour in natural lighting, but sharpness was lacking in both sets of shots.
Verdict
A tough, usable laptop with a great screen, the Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-15Q is a good Windows 7 choice.
